About these videos of NYC Subway Mosaics:

I created these videos as an extension of my hands-on mosaic class. While teaching, I wanted to take my students to see the subway mosaics in New York City, but this wasn't always safe or practical. Instead, I decided to visit the sites myself and make videos to bring the art to my students and a wider audience.

Public art in the New York subway system is, in my view, one of the city's greatest treasures. It brings museum-quality art to the people for the price of a subway ride. Not only that, but subway riders can touch the art—a tactile connection that makes it even more special. However, I often see people walk right by these mosaics without understanding their significance.

Through these videos, I aim to provide free art education, sharing the stories and details behind these remarkable works of art. My goal is to help both residents and visitors appreciate the tremendous treasure we have in our subway system. I’m deeply passionate about the power of art education to enrich lives, and these videos are my way of sharing knowledge and illuminating the riches that are right at hand for all to enjoy.

On the Behind the Scenes Video page, I also bring viewers along to fabricators in Italy and Germany to see how subway mosaics are created. These videos highlight the intricate process behind the production of mosaics, from traditional materials to contemporary techniques. Additionally, they offer a glimpse into how traditional mosaics are made, showcasing the enduring craft and artistry involved.
